Connected Places Catapult: Strengthening sustainability strategy with Open Source Sustainability Intelligence

Connected Places Catapult is the UK's innovation accelerator for cities, transport, and place leadership. With a mission to make towns, cities, and transport systems more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous, the Catapult plays a key role in helping organisations unlock innovation that delivers real-world impact — on people, planet, and local economies.

That mission made them a natural partner for Mettle Capital, whose Open Source Sustainability Intelligence helps organisations identify the sustainability issues most relevant to them — and keep track of how those topics develop over time, without relying on static benchmarks or manual monitoring.

Working closely with James Luger, Head of Sustainability, Mettle is helping to embed Open Source Sustainability Intelligence into the sustainability strategy process — introducing key stakeholders to the method while also equipping James and his team with more advanced tools and analytics for deeper analysis and insight.

James Luger, Head of Sustainability:

“We needed more than static benchmarks. Mettle gives us a living picture of how sustainability issues are evolving around our organisation and sector, giving us insights into how we want to react.”

Over the course of the engagement, Connected Places Catapult will have access to the OSMA reporting dashboard, alongside a programme of tailored sessions with key internal stakeholders. The collaboration is also exploring creative, lightweight ways to involve broader stakeholder groups — going beyond traditional surveys to generate richer, more representative input.
